Offense explodes and defense holds down the fort for Lehigh

Lehigh competed in the Third Annual Winter Classic this Saturday night at the Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink which helps support the Lehigh Valley Polar Bears, a local, special hockey team. The Winter Classic is an event with games all day that concluded with the Lehigh-Kutztown game. All of the proceeds from the event went to Special Hockey of the Lehigh Valley, a program that allows individuals with special needs the chance to play hockey. The Lehigh players knew how big of an event this was and wanted to show the Lehigh Valley how successful the ice hockey program has become.

Lehigh began the first period with intense pressure on Kutztown and struck first with a goal from Adam Goldstein 3:14 into the game. The goal was assisted by Evan Goldstein and Scott Mogerley. Lehigh struck again at the halfway point of the first period when Kevin McGee danced around a few Kutztown defenders and found the back of the net. Chris Ramondelli and Scott Reville provided the assists. That was all the goal support senior goalie Patrick Walgren needed, stopping all 33 shots that came his way for Lehigh's second shutout this season.

Lehigh came out in the second period with even more intensity and was awarded. Chris Ramondelli extended the lead to 3-0 just two minutes into the period. Lehigh capitalized on the powerplay minutes later when Chris Ramondelli found the back of the net for his second of the game to extend the lead to 4-0. Both goals were assisted by Joseph Ramondelli and Kevin McGee. With less than two minutes left in the second period Chris Ramondelli completed the hat trick with assists from Eric DelGizzo and Andrew Clayton. The second period would end with Lehigh ahead 5-0.

The third period was nothing different. Lehigh continued to keep the pressure on Kutztown and Evan Goldstein would provide the next two goals for Lehigh, coming at 4:58 and 8:03 of the third period. Joseph Ramondelli, Scott Mogerley and Andrew Clayton would provide assists for the goals. Patrick Walgren kept the shutout with some big saves near the end of the game and Lehigh's defense continued to shutdown Kutztown for a 7-0 victory.

Lehigh will return to action against Villanova at Hatfield Ice Arena on Wednesday, February 10 in their last league game of the season. The game will start at 10pm, follow @LUIceHockey for updates to the game. Lehigh will return to the Steel Ice Center next weekend where they face off with IUP Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
