BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will travel to Annapolis, Md. this weekend for the Navy Spring Invitational. The Mountain Hawks have impressed in their last two outings of the season, finishing fifth at the Wildcat Invitational in Malvern, Pa. and second at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational hosted by Lafayette, in Hellertown.

Colgate and Lafayette will join Navy and Lehigh Saturday and Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Course.

Lehigh freshman Billy Johns carried the Mountain Hawks to fifth place out of sixteen teams at the Wildcat Invitational by earning individual medalist honors. Johns, a Johns Creek, Ga. native, shot a final round 67 to finish at four under par on the day. His 67 was the lowest competitive round of the year for the Mountain Hawks to date and just the third round in the 60s this season. Johns also shot an opening round 73, as his performance over two rounds gave him the individual title at two under par. He won by two strokes over four players who tied for second.

As a team, Lehigh rode a strong final round at the Wildcat Invitational to shoot a combined 592 (307-285). Senior Carlos Kim placed in the top ten with a 71 in the final round on his way to eighth place at three under par. Junior Harley Abrams finished in 24th place at 150.  Abrams shot a one under par 70 in the final round.

The Mountain Hawks continued their strong play at the Lafayette Invitational with a second placed finish. Lehigh followed up their opening round 299 with a 293, the lowest team round of the weekend. St. Peter's won the tournament by one stroke over the Mountain Hawks at 591.

Kim and Abrams were strong again, as they finished tied for second overall as individuals. The senior duo both shot three over par 145 at the 36-hole event. Abrams, a junior from Boca Raton, Fla., fired an even par 71 in the final round, which was good for the low round of the weekend.

This weekend's Navy Spring Invitational features a slightly different format than previous years as the tournament moved up a week to accommodate the Patriot League Women's Championship next weekend at the Naval Academy Golf Course.

Lehigh will be bringing six players to Annapolis, while Colgate will be bringing nine players, Lafayette will bring eight and Navy will begin with 13.

The four teams will play a round of stroke play Saturday morning, following the same play-six, count-four format that is used at the Patriot League Championship. The remaining players will compete as individuals.

After the first round, the teams will be seeded one through four according to score.  At that time each coach will have the opportunity to substitute players into his starting lineup for the next two rounds.

In Saturday's afternoon round, six players from the No. 1 seed will face six players from the No. 4 seed in match play singles with the same format taking place between the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. Individual ties will be played off at sudden death. The extra golfers will be paired up and play match play exhibition matches, although with only six golfers traveling, Lehigh will not have any golfers in these exhibition matches.

Sunday morning's final round will match the semifinal winners playing for the championship in match play and the other two teams playing a consolation match with additional individuals playing exhibition matches.

Lehigh has been a regular participant in the Navy Spring Invitational. Last year Kim tied for fourth overall, but injuries left Lehigh with just three healthy players at the end of the tournament so the Mountain Hawks did not post a final team score.

Following the Navy Invitational, Lehigh will play rival Lafayette in stroke play on April 22 in its final tune-up before the Patriot League Championship April 25-26 in Hamilton, N.Y.
