Bausher, Yozzo collect league honors after Lehigh opens with 3-1 weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team opened its season with a 3-1 showing at the Citrus Classic II in Orlando, Fla., where the Mountain Hawks defeated Omaha, Northern Iowa and Saint Francis (Pa.). On Monday, two Mountain Hawks were recognized by the Patriot League for their impressive performances last week. Senior Emily Bausher earned Pitcher of the Week honors while Freshman Nicole Yozzo took home Rookie of the Week laurels.
Bausher was terrific in her two outings against Omaha and Northern Iowa. In her first start against Omaha on Friday, Bausher picked up a victory after throwing seven innings and allowing only two earned runs. She also racked up ten strikeouts to lead Lehigh to a 6-5 win. Sunday against Northern Iowa, Bausher allowed only one hit to earn her 16th career shutout in Lehigh's 2-0 victory. Aside from the second inning of the Omaha game, where she was tagged for five runs (two earned), Bausher allowed no runs on two hits in her other 13 innings of work last weekend.
While Bausher was dominant in the circle, Yozzo dazzled at the plate. The Pleasanton, California native accumulated 12 hits in 14 at bats for a .857 batting average. Yozzo had at least two hits and a run scored in each game at the Citrus Classic. In her debut in brown and white, Yozzo had a game-tying RBI infield single against Omaha. She followed up that performance by scoring the go-ahead run in Sunday's win over UNI. The Mountain Hawks' speedy leadoff hitter also picked two stolen bases on the week and went 4-for-4 in a losing effort against Indiana on Friday.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday with the first two of six scheduled contests in three days at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Fla. Lehigh will take on Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. and Presbyterian at 12:15 p.m. to kick off a string of 12 games in eight days over spring break.
