Lafayette edges Lehigh 9-7 to retain President's Cup

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Lehigh and Lafayette played their annual President's Cup matches Tuesday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. At the end of a tightly-contested day of golf, the Leopards prevailed 9-7 to retain the cup that they reclaimed last October.
The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style match play format. Play began in the morning with four better ball nine-hole doubles matches followed by four alternate shot nine-hole doubles matches. The afternoon session matched eight Mountain Hawks against eight Leopards in singles match play.
The teams were even at 4-4 after the eight doubles matches, but Lafayette won five of eight singles matches to claim the cup.
Lafayette started strong, claiming three of the first four better ball matches, but Lehigh answered back in the alternate shot, winning two matches while the other two were halved. Lehigh's top doubles team of sophomore Billy Johns and senior Dave Olexson won 3 & 1 over Art Griffin and James Frahm in better ball play. Freshmen led the way for the Mountain Hawks in alternate shot play, as Johnny Hsu and Max Redetzke won 3 & 2 over Patrick Luther and Chad Bell, while Eamon Marone and Lee Hammerschmidt won by the same score over Travis Ricca and John Warden.
In singles play, Lehigh and Lafayette split positions three through eight, but the Leopards claimed wins at the top two flights to earn the victory. Griffin beat Johns 1 up while Frahm won 2 up over Olexson.
Hsu beat Luther 5 & 4 at the No. 3 spot for Lehigh while Hammerschmidt defeated Warden 1 up at No. 6. Junior Brendan Worthy won 4 & 3 over JB Bradbeer at the No. 7 position.
The Mountain Hawks will now shift focus to their final fall tournament, the Lehigh Invitational, which they will host Friday and Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley CC.
