BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its first home Patriot League win, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena on Wednesday evening to host the Navy Midshipmen. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Sophomore Tim Kempton is leading the charge for Lehigh, especially as of late, tallying 50 points and 26 rebounds over his last two games to earn Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Wednesday is Lehigh's Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness game as part of Awareness Week around the country.
Â
Fans are encouraged to wear suits and sneakers on Wednesday. Lacing up sneakers helps highlight the fact that while cancer remains a major health concern, everyone can take daily steps to reduce their risk of the disease. For those who do not smoke, weight control, exercise and a healthy diet are the best ways to improve health and reduce cancer risk. Donations in the fight against cancer will also be accepted on Wednesday, while several other things are planned surrounding the event.
Â
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead on Saturday, eventually taking a 20-point second-half advantage. The Crusaders inched back, pulling within single digits down the stretch. Holy Cross eventually cut the lead to four, but with just one second left as Lehigh wrapped up the 69-64 victory. Kempton finished with a career-high 26 points and season-high tying 13 rebounds (for a second straight game), shooting 9-of-11 from the floor. Freshman Kahron Ross also tallied 13 points and ten assists, marking his second-career double-double and the third game this season that multiple Mountain Hawks have recorded double-doubles.
Â
Sophomore Austin Price also added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, knocking down 2-of-4 three-pointers as Kempton, Ross and price combined for 52 of the team's 69 points. Mitchell Hahn led Holy Cross with 12 points while Malcolm Miller had 11 rebounds. A preseason All-Patriot League honoree, the Mountain Hawks held Miller to just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.
Â
Navy has been a surprise team so far, entering with a 3-3 Patriot League record and impressive league victories over Loyola, Lafayette and Army. Predicted tenth in the preseason poll, the Midshipmen are 7-11 overall. Lehigh has won nine straight games against Navy overall with the last loss coming in February of 2010. A recent Lehigh highlight against Navy came last January when Stefan Cvrkalj scored 14-half points leading into Mackey McKnight's last-second layup to give Lehigh a thrilling overtime win.
Â
Navy's season started with a slim 64-59 loss against nationally-ranked Michigan State. The Midshipmen have defeated Loyola, Lafayette and Army in league play with slim defeats to Boston University and Bucknell. Worth Smith leads the offense with 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Brandon Venturini isn't far behind with averages of 12.4 and 4.0, respectively. Venturini also leads the team in assists with 56 in 18 games. Tilman Dunbar is right behind with 55 assists for a 3.1 average to go with his 8.9 points per game. The Mids have lost two straight games, at Bucknell and vs. Colgate. They are 4-5 at home and just 2-5 on the road.
Â
The Midshipmen lead the all-time series, 43-26, but Lehigh has won nine straight dating the last four seasons. Navy's last win came in Feb. 10, 2010 by an 85-78 final. Lehigh's first win was in 1925-26 by a 25-23 final.
Â
Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh will hit the road for the next two games as the Mountain Hawks travel to Lafayette on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Bucknell next Wednesday (8 p.m.).
