Â
"We showed a lot of character today and I'm very proud of the team for that," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "It was great to see the depth that we have on the team and now we know a few things we'll have to work on before league play gets started on Wednesday."
Â
The first set of the day's opening match against Delaware State began in a 6-6 tie before a bad set from the Hornets and a service ace from sophomore Taylor Carroll sparked a 10-4 Lehigh run to give the Mountain Hawks a 16-10 advantage. The Mountain Hawks led by five at 20-15 before back-to-back kills from DSU's Jasmine Jackson and a bad set from Lehigh pulled the Hornets within two at 20-18. Lehigh responded with kills from Lowe and junior Stephanie Slater to regain control and eventually roll to a 25-21 set one victory.
Â
Lehigh got off to a quick 6-3 lead in the second set before the Mountain Hawks recorded eight-straight points on the serve of junior Claire Bradshaw. Lehigh kept dominating as five separate Mountain Hawks recorded kills and Lehigh cruised to a 25-11 set-two victory to claim a 2-0 match advantage. The Mountain Hawks hit a game-high .458 in the second set while stifling the Hornet attack and holding Delaware State to a -.043 attack percentage.
Â
The third set began much closer and opened in an 11-11 tie. A pair of kills from Carroll coupled with two DSU errors pushed Lehigh to a 15-11 advantage. The Mountain Hawks held onto a four-point lead at 20-16, but the Hornets attempted to put together a rally with a 4-1 run to close the gap to 21-20. A spike from Jackson was the last DSU point of the match before a kill from sophomore Kianna Carroll and a Bradshaw service ace locked in the 25-22 set-three win and 3-0 match victory.
Â
Eighteen Mountain Hawks saw action in the match and Lehigh hit .248 as a team compared to Delaware State's .092. Lowe led Lehigh with eight kills followed by freshman Whitney Krantz with seven. Matula tallied 26 assists while Brantley registered 14 digs. Bradshaw finished the match with five service aces.
Â
Lehigh earned the first three points in the first set against Marist and eventually took an 8-3 lead after a Marist attack error. The lead reached 10-5 following a kill from junior Leah Turner. The Red Foxes pulled within 12-9, but Lehigh responded with three straight points, beginning and ending with kills from Genemaras, to take its largest lead of the set at 15-9. However, Marist went on to score nine of the next 12 points to pull even at 18. The teams ensued by going back and forth with neither side leading by more than two the rest of the first set. Lehigh led 23-21 after a kill from Krantz, but the Red Foxes recorded the final four points for the 25-21 victory.
Â
The second set was tight from the get-go as neither side led by more than two until it was 23-20 in favor of Marist. Lehigh got off to a quick start, but the Red Foxes used a 3-0 run to jump ahead for the first time, 7-6. The set stood tied at every point from 11 through 17 until a Marist kill and Lehigh attack error helped the Red Foxes take a 20-18 advantage. They wouldn't trail the rest of the way as Marist wrapped up the second set, 25-22.
Â
Marist took a quick 3-0 lead in the third set, eventually taking a 6-2 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go quietly. Trailing 12-8, Lehigh went on a 4-0 run beginning with a Slater kill. The run continued with two straight attack errors and ended with a kill from senior Jade Van Streepen to help Lehigh pull even for the first time. A few points later, a kill from Slater helped Lehigh take its first lead of the third set, 18-17. The teams stayed within two the rest of the way as another Slater kill sealed the 26-24 third-set victory.
Â
The Mountain Hawks controlled the fourth set from the get-go and would never trail. Lehigh used four straight points to open a 13-8 lead after a Marist attack error. Midway through the set, Lehigh erased any doubt with a 7-0 run to take a 22-11 lead. The run included two kills each from Van Streepen and Genemaras. Another Van Streepen kill followed by two consecutive attack errors wrapped up the 25-12 victory to force a deciding fifth set.
Â
Lehigh continued to ride the momentum early in the fifth set, scoring the first two points and eventually taking a 9-5 lead after a Krantz kill. Marist responded with five of the next six points to pull even at 10. Tied at 12, a pair of kills gave Marist a 14-12 lead as the Red Foxes took the fifth set, 15-13.
