Lehigh drops season opener to Saint Joseph’s, 2-1

8/29/2014 6:17:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team scored just 3:34 into its season and controlled play for much of the first half, but a late first-half goal from the Saint Joseph's Hawks propelled them to a 2-1 win over the Mountain Hawks on Friday. Junior Lindsey Schott scored Lehigh's goal, putting home a rebound off a penalty corner, while sophomore Julia Ward made 13 saves in a strong performance between the pipes.

"Our goal was to get the first shot and first goal, and we did that," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "That was awesome. I thought the first 25 minutes, we were strong, together and played as a team like how we practiced all preseason. It was definitely nice to see."

Lehigh came out firing, recording the game's first eight shots before Saint Joseph's first shot of the game came at the 19:16 mark. Saint Joseph's Kerri Turk corralled the rebound and fired a shot that looked ticketed for the back of the cage, but Lehigh sophomore defender Janelle High came up with a big defensive save.

The Hawks continued to pressure, knotting the score with just 15 seconds left in the first half as Jordan Martin fired a low shot past Ward off a penalty corner.

Saint Joseph's carried the momentum into the second half, holding a 14-3 shot advantage and converting at 60:01 as Martin made a run down the right side and went hard toward goal. After an initial save, Ward couldn't stop Martin's rebound and the Saint Joseph's senior forward made it 2-1.

Lehigh forced a penalty corner in the 66th minute, but the ensuing tip went wide. That proved to be the last chance the Mountain Hawks had.

"I think our players know they belong here, but the execution has to be better," said Eversley. "They have high expectations of themselves, as do we. They want to put the ball in, which is great. It will get there, but we have to keep working on it."

Final shots were 22-16 in favor of Saint Joseph's while Lehigh held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with 13 saves across Amelia Deibler who made eight.

"Julia played great. She was a wall back there and I thought her effort was amazing," said Eversley. "We could tweak a couple things with the defensive unit, but all in all, they were trying hard to keep that ball out."

Lehigh returns home on Sunday to host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 1 p.m. After this weekend, the Mountain Hawks return to action next Friday (Sept. 5) when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers.
