Lehigh drops Sunday contest at Fairfield

10/5/2014 4:37:00 PM | Field Hockey

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield took a quick lead and the Lehigh field hockey team was unable to respond, falling 4-0 in a nonleague contest on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks recorded 11 shots and four shots on goal, but couldn't beat a pair of Stags' goalkeepers. Lehigh will return to action next weekend with a pair of games in New England, beginning with a Patriot League tilt at Boston University Saturday.

"Fairfield was a good, aggressive team," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We adjusted well in the second half, but dug ourselves a hole in the first."

The Stags came out with a quick goal, scoring just 33 seconds into the game. Lehigh responded with a penalty corner just over two minutes later and a shot by sophomore Marissa Glatt in the sixth minute, but Fairfield's defense stood tall. The Stags then made it 2-0 at 10:05 as Ann Burgoyne scored her second of the game on a rebound opportunity following a save from Lehigh sophomore goalie Julia Ward.

Lehigh pressured after the second goal, generating two penalty corners in 41 seconds and a subsequent shot on goal from junior Zoey Pacheco, but Fairfield goalie Caitlin Bennett was there to make the save.

Burgoyne scored her third goal of the game late in the first half as she had a one-on-one with Ward and beat the sophomore keeper to make it 3-0 at 31:06.

Lehigh freshman goalie Katie Morris entered in the second half and immediately made two saves in the first 5:09 to keep the Mountain Hawks close. However, in the 62nd minute, she couldn't stop a rebound opportunity as Emily Leo made it 4-0 Stags, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Final shots were 17-11 in favor of Fairfield while the Mountain Hawks had a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Glatt led Lehigh with three shots while Pacheco recorded a team-high two shots on goal. Ward finished with three saves while Morris posted two. Bennett and Emma Ball each made two saves for Fairfield.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they travel to Boston University (Saturday) and Brown (Sunday). Both games will begin at 12 p.m.
