Strong first half not enough in 4-2 loss at Brown

10/12/2014 3:18:00 PM | Field Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Lehigh field hockey team controlled play in the first half against a strong Brown University squad that entered with a 6-3 record, but the Mountain Hawks were outscored 3-1 in the second half in a 4-2 defeat on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Amanda Granger and freshman Jackie Renda scored Lehigh's goals while freshman goalie Katie Morris impressed over the final 10:18, stopping three-of-four shots sent her way.

"We came out strongly to play a dominating first half, but in the second half, we gave them too many opportunities to shoot and didn't stick to what was working," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley.

Lehigh held a 5-3 first-half edge in shots and turned that pressure into the game's first goal as Granger tipped in a shot from sophomore Marissa Glatt to make it 1-0 Mountain Hawks at 15:59.

Brown answered just under seven minutes later as Emma Quigley tipped a shot past Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Julia Ward to even the score at one. The Bears took their first lead early in the second half on a shot from just inside the arc, making it 2-1 at the 40:21 mark.

Brown made it 3-1just over 10 minutes later, but Renda answered with her first-career goal, a penalty-stroke tally, less than a minute later to pull Lehigh within 3-2 at 51:40. Moments later, Glatt fired a shot on goal looking for the equalizer, but Brown goalie Shannon McSweeney made the stop.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Morris made three saves in the span of 3:20, while sophomore Janelle High added a defensive stop, to keep Lehigh within one. It almost paid off as the Mountain Hawks created a late penalty corner. However, the Bears all but wrapped up the victory with a goal with less than one minute remaining for the 4-2 final.

Final shots were 13-7 in favor of Brown, but six of Lehigh's seven shots were on goal. Each team finished with two penalty corners. Ward made two saves, allowing three goals, while Ward made three stops, allowing one goal. McSweeney finished with four saves for Brown.

Lehigh will return to action in one week as the Mountain Hawks travel to Lock Haven. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
