LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven scored just 23 seconds into the game and the Lehigh field hockey team could never respond as the Bald Eagles topped the Mountain Hawks 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Julia Ward entered in relief to stop seven-of-eight shots sent her way as the Lehigh defense bounced back to allow just one goal over the game's final 53:42.
Â
The Bald Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead on the first rush of the game as Rachel Valentine finished a centering pass just 23 seconds into the contest. Lock Haven doubled its lead at 12:17 off a penalty corner as junior Kat Kneizys made a defensive save, but the ball eventually crossed the goal line to make it 2-0. The Bald Eagles made it 3-0 just over four minutes later at 16:18. After that point, the Lehigh defense bore down to allow just one shot the rest of the half, which Ward saved to keep the deficit at three heading into halftime.
Â
The Mountain Hawks had some glittering opportunities to cut the deficit to two when they generated three consecutive penalty corners beginning in the 55th minute. Junior Erin Ricker had a shot off one of those corners, but Lock Haven goalie Elaina White came out strong to make the stop.
Â
Just under three minutes later, the Bald Eagles were finally able to beat Ward as they executed a redirection at the far post off a penalty corner to make it 4-0 at 57:49, which proved to be the final.
Â
Final shots were 19-3 in favor of Lock Haven while the Bald Eagles held a 13-5 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with seven saves relieving freshman Katie Morris who made her first-career start. White made two stops for Lock Haven.
Â
Lehigh will return to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to archrival Lafayette on Saturday at 12 p.m.
