BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team knocked off Fairleigh Dickinson Friday night in straight sets. This is the third straight time the Mountain Hawks beat their opponents by a score of 3-0. The game was the first of Lehigh's three home matches this weekend, all of which are a part of the Lafayette College Tournament.
"It was nice for us to win in three (games) and start the tournament off on the right foot," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "I think our intensity is where we wanted it to be. We concentrated a lot at the end of the game when it was the 'moneyball' time of the match."
The Mountain Hawks got off to a quick start in the first set, quickly jumping on the Knights 10-4. FDU was able to slowly fight back, but Lehigh remained in control throughout the set. The Mountain Hawks tallied 16 kills in the first set, and were able to cruise to a 25-18 victory, which gave them the 1-0 advantage.
The second set was a tougher battle, as the two teams were neck and neck throughout the majority of the set. The teams found themselves at a 20-20 standoff that left the set anyone's game. Two attack errors and a bad set by Fairleigh Dickinson quickly put the Mountain Hawks back on top 23-20. Fairleigh Dickinson tallied one more kill, but back-to-back kills by Lehigh freshman Kianna Carroll and junior Jade Van Streepen gave Lehigh the 25-21 victory.
Lehigh built upon their momentum and opened the third set with a quick 8-2 run. The Mountain Hawks never let the Knights get within three points, and at one point had a 10 point lead as they found themselves leading 19-9. FDU wasn't able to fight back this time, and a service ace by sophomore Ana Vrhel capped off the game, 25-13.
Junior Kaylynn Genemaras led the way with eight kills for the Mountain Hawks, followed by Vrhel with six. Senior Rachel Charles tallied 17 digs, and is now only 19 away from becoming Lehigh's all-time career digs leader.
The Mountain Hawks continue tournament action tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. match against Wright State. They will also host Saint Peter's at 4 p.m.
