BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung with #11 nationally-ranked Albany, standing within a goal until late in the first half, but the Great Danes prevailed 4-1 on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A pair of freshmen impressed as goalkeeper Julia Ward finished with a career-high 21 saves while Marissa Glatt scored a goal for a sixth straight game.
Â
"Albany is a great team," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "I think our team came to play today and did a lot of good things."
Â
Neither team could score over the first 13 minutes as Ward stood tall, making six saves in that span to keep the game scoreless until Echo Bretz finished a centering feed from Emily White to make it 1-0 at 13:07.
Â
That score remained until 32:01 when Liza Morgan converted a similar pass from White to make it 2-0. Corrine McConville posted a penalty stroke goal just over two minutes later to make it 3-0 at the half.
Â
After more than 20 minutes without a goal, Lehigh struck first in the second half. Following an initial save off a penalty corner, sophomore Lindsey Schott found Glatt who made the deflection past Albany goalie Averill Erdody to make it 3-1 at 56:37.
Â
The Great Danes answered just over a minute later for a 4-1 lead, which proved to be the final.
Â
Albany held the final edge in shots (36-5) and penalty corners (12-5). Ward's 21 saves came across Erdody who made one.
Â
"Julia did an outstanding goal back there," said Blue. "She was saving everything. She's been working really hard and had an excellent game. Marissa is on a roll."
Â
Lehigh returns to Patriot League action on Saturday when it hosts arch rival Lafayette at 11 a.m.
