Mountain Hawks drop 4-1 final to Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung right with defending Patriot League champion Lafayette for much of the game, but the Leopards proved too much in the end, downing the Mountain Hawks 4-1 on Saturday. A pair of freshmen connected for Lehigh's goal as Marissa Glatt found Gabby Tofig just 23 seconds into the second half.
Â
"I think we started to play in the second half, but we dug ourselves a hole so it was hard to get back," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "We kept fighting and saw a lot of good things in the second half."
Â
Neither team got a shot on goal until Lafayette's Brittany Blass scored off a direct shot from a penalty corner at the 20:07 mark. Just over nine minutes later, the Leopards made it 2-0 as Kelsey Mead deflected a shot off a corner.
Â
Lafayette made it 3-0 at 34:19 as Haley Keenan converted a rebound following a save from Lehigh freshman Julia Ward.
Â
It took just 23 seconds in the second half for the Mountain Hawks to cut into the lead as Glatt found Tofig in front of the cage. She finished her third goal of the season to get Lehigh right back into the game. The assist extends Glatt's point streak to seven straight games. The goal marked Lehigh's first against Lafayette since the 2007 season, spanning seven games.
Â
The Mountain Hawks continued to have chances from there, finishing with six second-half shots to Lafayette's seven, but Leopards goalie Jessica Deutsch finished with three second-half stops and the Leopards added an insurance goal at 65:19 for the 4-1 final.
Â
Final shots were 18-7 in favor of Lafayette while the Leopards held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Ward was strong in goal, making nine saves across Deutsch who made three.
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to La Salle to face the Explorers. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
Â
"We're back at it tomorrow," said Blue. "We're going to tweak a couple things from today and are looking to finish."
