LORETTO, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team couldn't overcome a quick 3-0 hole as Saint Francis (Pa.) came away with a 6-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. After trailing 4-0, the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away as sophomore Erin Ricker scored in the first half while sophomore Katherine Koomar and freshman Amanda Granger added second-half tallies.
"We did not come to play from the start so we put ourselves in a hole very early," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "Caitlin Bryan, Gabby Tofig and Kassidy Green played well for us."
Â
Less than six minutes in, the Red Flash took a 3-0 lead behind Autumn Pellman's third goal of the afternoon.
Â
Selena Adamshick made it 4-0 at the 22:01 mark, but the Mountain Hawks continued to hang tough. Ricker rocketed home a shot off a penalty corner at 30:56 (assisted by junior Steph Fratoni) to make it 4-1 at the half.
Â
Saint Francis extended its lead to 5-1 less than 10 minutes into the second, but Lehigh responded with two of the final three goals. Koomar took a feed from junior Natalie Tacka and beat Red Flash goalie Jill DiCola to the left at 54:15 before Granger scored her first-career goal at 63:20 following a scrum in front of the cage.
Â
The Mountain Hawks couldn't pull any closer as the Red Flash added an insurance goal at 68:15 to cap off the scoring.
Â
Final shots were 19-10 in favor of Saint Francis while the Mountain Hawks earned eight penalty corners to four for the Red Flash. Freshman Julia Ward allowed four goals while junior Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson came in to make three saves and allow just two goals over the final 45:58. DiCola finished with three saves for Saint Francis.
Â
Lehigh returns to action on Friday night as it hosts Penn at 6 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will then travel to Towson for a 12 p.m. showdown on Sunday, Sept. 28.
