Mountain Hawks advance to semifinals with 4-0 win over Holy Cross

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's tennis team advanced to the Patriot League semifinals for the fourth straight year with a dominant 4-0 win over Holy Cross Friday in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament at Drumlins Country Club. Senior Matt Savran and sophomore Ben Gilman won in both doubles and singles play as Lehigh improves to 16-5 on the season.
Savran and freshman Jeremy Kochman started things off for the Mountain Hawks with an 8-3 win over Scott Brownell and Jeff Paadre at No. 2 singles, while Gilman teamed with senior Andrew Krentz to clinch the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Ron Buetti and Tom Casavant at the No. 3 flight. Lehigh's top duo of sophomore Mitchell Petersen and junior Mark Goldberg was up 6-2 in their match, which did not finish since the Mountain Hawks had already clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, Savran gave the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead, blanking Buetti 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Junior Timur Chernykh extended Lehigh's lead to 3-0 winning 6-0, 6-2 over Casavant at No. 6 singles, while Gilman clinched the quarterfinal win for the Brown and White with a 6-0, 6-1 over Chris Brosnan at the No. 2 flight.
Lehigh was up a set and up 5-0 in the second set at No. 3 and No. 5 singles when the match was clinched, while Goldberg was up 4-3 in the first set of his match at No. 1 singles.
The Mountain Hawks will now face No. 3 Bucknell in Saturday's second semifinal set for approximately 2 p.m. The Bison defeated No. 6 Lafayette 4-0 in Friday's third match. Top seed Army will face No. 4 Navy, who defeated Colgate 4-0 earlier Friday in the first semifinal. Matches will once again be played indoors at Drumlins Country Club.
