Mountain Hawks rally to edge Delaware 4-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After dropping the doubles point, the Lehigh men's tennis team rallied to win four of six singles matches to battle past Delaware 4-3 Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Freshman Jeremy Kochman clinched the victory with a straight-set win over Alex Sweet at No. 6 singles as Lehigh improves to 3-1 on the season.
Delaware (1-1) won the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Lehigh's No. 3 team of senior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Ben Gilman won 8-3 over Mike Furr and Jason Derenet, but the Blue Hens' top team of Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton downed junior Mark Goldberg and Mitchell Peterson 8-4 for the clinching point.
Lehigh entered singles play shorthanded as Goldberg was scratched from the lineup as head coach Wouter Hendrix bumped everyone else up one flight. Petersen put the Mountain Hawks on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lawton at No.2 singles. The other three of the top four flights required three sets with Krentz downing Furr 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 for Lehigh and Beneck holding off Gilman 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Nolan Gelman winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 over senior Matt Savran at No. 3 singles.
Junior Timur Chernykh pulled the Mountain Hawks even at 3-3 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Derene at No. 5 singles and with the match on the line, Kochman dominated Sweet 6-1, 6-0 to secure the clinching point for the Brown and White.
Lehigh will continue its home stand next weekend when the Mountain Hawks host Stony Brook Saturday at 9 a.m. and Mount St. Mary's Sunday at 10 a.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
