BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following an outstanding senior season Lehigh wide receiver Lee Kurfis garnered a pair of All-America honors on Wednesday. Kurfis was named a first team All-American by the Sports Network and also landed on the Associated Press FCS All-America second team.
Â
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kurfis stepped up to fill the shoes of two-time All-American Ryan Spadola, who is now on the Miami Dolphins' practice squad. In his first season as Lehigh's go-to receiver, Kurfis caught 99 passes for 1,351 yards and nine touchdowns. His 99 receptions broke Spadola's school record of 96 set two seasons ago, while his 1,351 receiving yards marked the second highest single-season total in school history.
Â
Kurfis opened the 2013 campaign by catching seven passes for a Goodman Stadium record 222 yards and two touchdowns as the Mountain Hawks erased a 20 point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Central Connecticut State in double overtime. The following week, Kurfis netted ten more catches for 211 yards and two more touchdowns in a come-from-behind win at Monmouth to become the first player in Patriot League history to record consecutive 200-yard receiving games.
Â
The FCS leader in receiving yards per game (122.8), Kurfis eclipsed the 100 yard receiving mark in seven of Lehigh's 11 games in 2013. His 1,351 receiving yards ranks fourth overall in the FCS. Kurfis also ranks third nationally in receptions per game with nine. He had four games with double-digit catches, highlighted by a school record-tying 14-catch, 130-yard, two-touchdown performance in an October win at Columbia.
Â
Kurfis earned first team All-Patriot League honors last month and finished his career with 153 receptions for 2,183 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Â
The West Chester, Pa., native is Lehigh's first football All-American since four players were cited following the 2011 season. That year quarterback Chris Lum and Spadola received numerous All-American laurels including honors from the Sports Network and the Associated Press. In addition, offensive tackle Troy McKenna earned third team All-America honors from the AP while center Jim Liebler was a third team Sports Network All-American.
Â
Last week Kurfis picked up first team All-America honors from the Beyond Sports Network.
Â
Kurfis and the rest of Lehigh's senior class compiled a 39-9 record including a pair of Patriot League championships and FCS playoff wins in 2010 and 2011. Over the last four seasons, seven Lehigh football players have garnered a total of 12 All-America honors from either the Sports Network or the Associated Press.Â
