BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its final home match of the regular season the Lehigh volleyball team defeated Bucknell 3-0 Friday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks hit an impressive .302 in posting set score wins of 25-16, 25-8 and 25-20.
A balanced attack saw four Mountain Hawks record eight or more kills, while sophomore Claire Bradshaw had four of Lehigh's seven service aces as the Mountain Hawks improve to 19-7 overall and 10-4 in the Patriot League.
"We really came out and attacked them with our serve," said Lehigh head coach Bob Bertucci. "That was a big difference in game one and two. We were really going after them and they struggled with the serve receive. We had six aces and one error after two games. That was probably the most significant thing."
Lehigh started fast in set one, scoring the first five points and eight of the first nine overall. Bradshaw's first ace of the night gave Lehigh its largest lead at 10-2 before Bucknell began crawling back. The Bison got within four at 14-10 before Lehigh won 11 of the next 17 points to close out the set. The Mountain Hawks scored the final three points of the set on two kills by sophomore Ana Vrhel and a kill by senior Courtney McCutchan.
In set two, the Mountain Hawks broke an early 3-3 tie by going on an 8-0 run, keyed by three more Bradshaw aces, to open up an 11-3 advantage. Lehigh maintained a lofty lead throughout the set and closed out the set with four straight points capped by a kill by junior Kaylynn Genemaras to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Lehigh hit a blistering .481 in the second set with 14 kills and just one error, while limiting the Bison to a .000 hitting percentage.
"We started generating a little more outside attacks, with Jade Van Streepen and Kaylynn really hitting in full stride," Bertucci said. "Kaylynn did a great job. She had no hitting errors in 20 or so attempts and did a really nice job for us."
Bucknell (9-15, 2-12 Patriot League) hung tough throughout the third set. The lead went back-and-forth several times before senior Amanda Clark's kill sparked a 5-0 Mountain Hawk run that turned a an 18-17 deficit into a 22-18 lead. The Bison crept back within two at 22-20 but Lehigh won the final three points on a kill by freshman Kianna Carroll, a service ace by sophomore Amy Matula and an attack error by Bucknell's Jessica Serrato.
Genemaras finished with nine kills and a .375 hitting percentage that featured zero errors, while McCutchan, Vrhel and junior Jade Van Streepen registered eight kills apiece. Vrhel hit a team-best .400 while she, Clark and Van Streepen totaled three blocks apiece for the match. Matula handed out 33 assists while senior Rachel Charles and freshman Mariah Brantley paced the defense with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Bucknell hit .078 for the match with Morgan Mientus leading the Bison with nine kills.
