BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team battled back from a pair of deficits, but a Rider goal at 50:19 proved to be the difference as the Mountain Hawks fell 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks fired 10 shots on goal and had a golden opportunity in the final minute, but Rider goalie Joelle Prettyman made a sensational save to preserve the Broncs' victory.
Â
"I thought it was a great game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "It was competitive and could have been anyone's game. I thought Lehigh came to play as a team. I'm really proud of them."
Â
The effort came against a Rider team that entered with a 7-3 record and was predicted to win the MAAC Title in its preseason poll.
Â
Sandra Penas broke a scoreless tie at 23:58 when she fired a hard backhand shot from the top of the circle into the corner of the cage to make it 1-0.
Â
The first half saw 14 shots, but the second half turned wide open with four goals in the first 15:19. Freshman Gabby Tofig scored the equalizer at 36:41. Sophomore Erin Ricker put the ball towards cage off a penalty corner, allowing Tofig to beat the Rider goalkeeper.
Â
"They've been able to score, even when we're down," said Blue. "They're always fighting and that tells us something. I think they're doing a really good job out there."
Â
Rider answered less than six minutes later off a corner as Nicole Hareau carried the ball from the top of the circle and beat Lehigh freshman goalie Julia Ward to make it 2-1.
Â
Less than five minutes after that, Tofig found freshman Marissa Glatt near the top of the circle, who unleashed a hard backhand shot that made it 2-2 at 46:58.
Â
Just over four minutes later, the Broncs responded once again as Penas connected with Hareau off a corner for the second straight time to make it 3-2.
Â
Lehigh continued to pressure and had a golden opportunity off a penalty corner in the final minute. Sophomore Zoey Pacheco fired the initial shot towards cage. The ball eventually corralled to junior Steph Fratoni who unleashed a low shot, but Prettyman sprawled to her right to make the stop.
Â
Final shots were 26-14 in favor of Rider while the Broncs held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with 13 saves across Prettyman who made eight.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday to begin a busy weekend at home. Lehigh hosts new Patriot League member Boston University at 12 p.m. before returning 24 hours later to welcome Lock Haven on Sunday at 1 p.m.
