Lehigh drops 3-1 final to Boston University

10/12/2013 2:16:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Boston University jumped out to a 3-0 second-half lead, but the Mountain Hawks played their best down the stretch as freshman Marissa Glatt scored her Patriot League leading 10th goal of the season in a 3-1 defeat on Saturday. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two sides. This marks the Terriers' first year in the Patriot League.

"They're a strong program," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "We had a couple opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. We need to finish better. That's something we'll continue working on and hope to improve upon tomorrow [against Lock Haven]."

Lehigh posted the first two shots of the game (both on goal) and earned the first penalty corner. Sophomore Zoey Pacheco had a shot which led to the corner and senior Caitlyn Mitchell tipped a shot off the ensuing corner, which was saved by Boston University goalie Valentina Cerda Eimbcke.

The Terriers turned around and scored on their first shot of the game as Sara Marineau corralled a pass and beat Lehigh freshman goalie Julia Ward low to make it 1-0 at 7:38.

The Terriers made it 2-0 at 20:44 as Amanda Cassera scored the first of her two goals, making it 2-0 at the half.

Cassera struck again off a rebound to make it 3-0 at 39:42. Ward made two straight saves before Cassera scored on the Terriers' third attempt.

Lehigh continued to battle and turned it on down the stretch. It led to a goal at 68:47 when freshman Janelle High found Glatt in the circle. The Doylestown, Pa. native turned and beat Cerda Eimbcke low, inside the far post for the 3-1 final. Lehigh has not been shut-out this season.

"We started to pick it up and started to work well as a team," said Blue. "As I've said before, Marissa has been playing great. She's on a roll, so that's nice to see. I also though Julia played really well. I think we're getting there. We just need to finish and make sure we're capitalizing on our opportunities."

Final shots were 27-5 in favor of BU while the Terriers held a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Ward was strong, making 17 saves while Cerda Eimbcke made three.

The Mountain Hawks return to action in 24 hours when they host Atlantic 10 member Lock Haven on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will air live on the Patriot League Network.

"We've got to get ready again," said Blue. "We've been preparing all week. We know what we need to do; we just need to go out and do it."
