Pacheco’s late goal gives Lehigh big 2-1 win over Lock Haven

10/13/2013 3:27:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Zoey Pacheco scored her first-career goal with less than five minutes remaining to break a 1-1 tie, giving the Lehigh field hockey team a big 2-1 win over a strong Lock Haven squad on Sunday afternoon. Senior Caitlyn Mitchell scored the Mountain Hawks' first goal of the game while freshman Julia Ward was sensation with nine saves between the pipes as Lehigh handed the Bald Eagles just their fourth loss of the season (compared to ten wins).

"The team did great," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "They listened to our plan today and really executed. It was a great game."

Lock Haven out of the Atlantic 10 entered with a 10-3 record with its only losses coming to nationally-ranked North Carolina and Penn State, along with Saint Francis (Pa.). Among the Bald Eagles' victories are wins over Patriot League squads Bucknell and Colgate.

"Lock Haven is a great team," said Blue. "They have a lot of speed. Our defense knew that coming in and knew they would have to play together, which they did a good job of today."

The Bald Eagles pressured early and had three shots on goal off their first penalty corner less than five minutes into the game. Ward stopped them all and followed a minute later by coming out strong to break up a chance from Rebekah Hershey.

Lock Haven scored the game's first goal at 11:01 as Nakira Downes made a move into the circle and made a feed to Kiersten Cepeda who beat Ward high for the 1-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks quickly answered less than five minutes later to even the score. Off their first corner of the game, freshman Gabby Tofig fed Mitchell who blasted a low shot past Lock Haven goalie Elaina White to make it 1-1.

The Bald Eagles pressured, looking for the go-ahead goal, but Ward finished with seven first-half saves and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1 despite an 11-2 Lock Haven edge in shots.

The teams went back and forth in the second half, but both defenses stood tall. In the 49th minute, Lehigh earned consecutive penalty corners, which led to two shots on goal, but White was there to keep the score tied. White went on to make five second-half saves.

The Bald Eages' best chance came with just over 10 minutes remaining as Downes used her speed to create a breakaway. She went in all alone on Ward, but the freshman from Belfast, Maine came out to stonewall the Lock Haven forward and keep the score knotted at one.

Lehigh capitalized with time winding down in regulation as Pacheco took a hard shot towards goal which was deflected by a Lock Haven player past White for the 2-1 Mountain Hawks lead. The Bald Eagles couldn't get a shot off the rest of the way as Lehigh held on for the big victory.

"I definitely felt like we capitalized on our opportunities a bit more today, which was nice to see," said Blue. "Our corner execution was pretty good. As a whole, I think we did great."

Final shots were 17-9 in favor of Lock Haven while penalty corners stood even at seven. Ward made nine saves across White who made six.

Lehigh now hits the road for the next three games beginning with a big Patriot League showdown with Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m.
