Lehigh falls at Cornell, 2-0

ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell took a 1-0 lead late in the first half, which proved to be the difference, as the Lehigh field hockey team was shut out for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red held the Mountain Hawks to six shots, but Lehigh freshman goalie Julia Ward kept her squad in the game with an eight-save effort and the Mountain Hawks had several chances in the second half to even the score.
"It was a good, competitive game. They were able to capitalize on a few of our mistakes," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "Janelle (High), Caitey (Mitchell), Steph (Fratoni) and Natalie (Tacka) played well."
Marisa Siergiej broke a scoreless tie at 27:40, beating Ward following a give-and-go off a penalty corner.
Lehigh had several chances to even the score in the second half, including a shot on goal by freshman Gabby Tofig in the 48th minute, but Carolyn Horner was there to make one of her two saves. Just over three minutes later, senior Caitlyn Mitchell unleashed a shot off a corner, but Horner was there once again.
Siergiej scored her second goal with just 20 seconds remaining to end any doubt, making it 2-0 which stood as the final.
Tofig fired a team-high four shots on the afternoon, while Mitchell and freshman Marissa Glatt had the others. Cornell held a 18-6 edge in shots and 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Mountain Hawks return to Patriot League play for their final two games, heading to Holy Cross next Saturday (Oct. 26) before hosting American the following Saturday (Nov. 2) on Senior Day.
