JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lehigh men's track and field senior Evans Kosgei placed 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA First Round Friday to complete a historic season and career. The Moiben, Kenya native crossed the finish line with a time of 8:49.29, crushing his previous school record of 8:52.41. Kosgei placed fourth in his heat while falling just short of a top 12 finish which would have qualified him for the NCAA Championships.

It is Kosgei's second consecutive year qualifying for the NCAA First Round as he placed 30th in the same event last year with a time of 9:03.00.

Kosgei entered the race ranked No. 14 out of the 48 that qualified.

Kosgei was coming off a stellar Patriot League Championship, earning All-league honors after scored in three events: 10,000 meter (second), 3,000 meter steeplechase (second) and the 5,000 meter (fourth).

A top 12 finish would have made Kosgei an All-American and then would have competed June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Championships. Kosgei was just 2.20 off of qualifying time.
