Mountain Hawks upended by Army in Patriot League semifinals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh men's tennis team fell short of a second straight Patriot League finals appearance as the second seeded Mountain Hawks fell 4-0 to No. 3 seed Army Saturday at Navy's Tose Family Tennis Center. The defending tournament champion Black Knights won the race to four points by capturing two doubles matches and three singles matches.
Lehigh was two weeks removed from a 5-2 win over Army on the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts, but was unable to replicate the feat on Saturday. The Black Knights move on to the Patriot League finals Sunday against rival Navy.
“Army played a great match,” said Lehigh head coach Dave Shook. “They played really well and we played like the young team we are. It was a good experience for our kids and overall it was a good dual match season.”
Army captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milsten won 8-1 over Lehigh's top team of junior Matt Savran and freshman Ben Gilman and then Alex Holland and Rommel Verano clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over junior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Timur Chernykh.The Black Knights extended their lead with two wins at the bottom two singles flights as Rashad Shelton won 6-3, 6-1 over freshman DJ Goldblum at No. 6 singles and Verano won 6-3, 6-4 over Krentz at No. 5 singles.
Army clinched the win at No. 1 singles as Isoh won 6-4, 6-2 over sophomore Mark Goldberg. The Black Knights were leading at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, while Lehigh freshman Ben Gilman was tied 2-2 in the third set of his match at No. 2 singles.
Lehigh's season comes to an end at 13-8.
