Lehigh splits Sunday doubleheader at Holy Cross

4/15/2012 9:00:00 PM | Softball

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lehigh softball team split a doubleheader at Holy Cross Sunday, using an offensive outburst to win game one, 10-0, before the Crusaders rallied in the bottom of the seventh in game two. With the split, the Mountain Hawks (28-16, 11-1 Patriot League) officially clinched a league tournament berth. Senior Julie Fernandez led the charge in game one, going 3-for-3 with four RBI. The combination of junior Becca Bliss and sophomore Kelsey Lee combined to no-hit Holy Cross over five innings, not allowing a single base runner.

Offense was the story early on as the Mountain Hawks used three runs in the third and five in the fourth to go up 10-0 and win in five. Freshman Cassie Waggy went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while senior Jen Colquhoun finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Bliss struck out four over four hitless innings before Lee finished it off with a 1-2-3 fifth to seal the victory.

The Mountain Hawks took advantage of some early Holy Cross miscues, scoring twice in the first to set the tone. Colquhoun made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly, plating junior Rosie Roessel before Fernandez rounded out the scoring with a one-out double to score senior Audra Wood.

After a scoreless second inning, Lehigh plated three in the third to take a 5-0 advantage. Colquhoun made it 3-0 with an RBI single then Fernandez hit her second double in as many at-bats before scoring on a Waggy single.

Lehigh doubled its advantage in the fourth, scoring five behind a Wood RBI double, Fernandez two-run double, Liz Lucas sacrifice fly and Waggy RBI double. In total, the Mountain Hawks turned five hits into five runs and a 10-0 lead.

From there, Bliss and Lee did the rest, completing the five-inning perfect game.
Lehigh's offense was held at bay in game two, but the Mountain Hawks still led for six and a half innings before losing in heartbreaking fashion. Colquhoun broke a scoreless deadlock in the third with an RBI single to score Wood, who had singled and stolen second.

However, the Mountain Hawks were held to only two hits over the next four innings, and Holy Cross capitalized. With the bases empty and two outs in the seventh, the Crusaders responded with a double and two singles to score two runs and walk off with the victory, handing Lehigh its first league loss of the season.

Freshman Emily Bausher was strong in the circle, striking out seven over 6.2 innings. Colquhoun posted two of Lehigh's six hits in game two.

Lehigh returns home on Wednesday to host Princeton in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
