BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh saw its six match winning streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion as the Mountain Hawks fell 4-3 to Stony Brook Friday at the Lewis Tennis Center. In a marathon, back-and-forth affair, the final matches in doubles and singles were decided by tiebreaks, and while Lehigh won the doubles point on a tiebreak, it was Stony Brook who clinched the match with a third set tiebreak win at No. 5 singles.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreak at the No. 3 flight. Lehigh struck first as junior Matt Savran and freshman Ben Gilman won 8-2 over Roope Kailaheimo and Robert Forai at No. 2 doubles, but Stony Brook answered as the Seawolves' top team of Nikita Fomin and Francis Bertrand pulled out an 8-6 win over sophomore Mark Goldberg and freshman Mitchell Petersen.
I
n the decisive doubles match, junior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Timur Chernykh needed to come from behind to force a tiebreak against Max Sztabholz and Stefan Ilic but once they did, they edged the Seawolf duo 8-6 to win the match 9-8 and give the Mountain Hawks the early 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook went in front in singles play as Fomin downed Goldberg in straight sets at No. 1 singles and Ilic won 6-2, 6-3 over Savran at No. 4 singles. Gilman pulled Lehigh even with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Kailaheimo at No. 3 singles. Petersen grabbed the first set from Bertrand at No. 2 singles 6-2, but Bertrand rallied to take the next two sets 6-3 and 7-5 to push Stony Brook to a 3-2 advantage.
Lehigh's freshmen have been a strong point all season long and DJ Goldblum responded with a straight set win over Forai at No. 6 singles, meaning the match would come down to Krentz and Sztabholz at No. 5 singles. In a three-set thriller, Krentz took the first set 6-2, but Sztabholz answered with a 6-4 win in the second. The third set went to a tiebreak, where Sztabholz prevailed 8-6 to win the match for the Seawolves.
The loss drops Lehigh's record to 6-2 on the season. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Binghamton at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
