BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team marked the end of its season with its annual banquet on Sunday, Jan. 15 in the University Center. Three prestigious awards were presented to student-athletes who excelled, both on and off the court. The program included dinner, an awards presentation and time for reflection by coaches and players.
The Athlete of the Year, presented to senior Jessica Kudirka, was awarded to the team member who made the most outstanding contribution to the success of the team. Starting all 29 matches, Kudirka posted 55 kills in averaging 0.56 kills per set. Her impact was most prominent in assists, as her 1,004 helpers were by far the most on the team and third in the Patriot League. The Illinois native ranked near the top in just about every major category, including blocks and digs.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year, given to sophomore Amanda Clark, was awarded to the team member with outstanding work in the classroom. The Biology major boasts a 3.85 GPA in the classroom, earning a spot on the Patriot League All-Academic Team. Clark's success also translated onto the court as she set a career-high in kills (172) and was fourth on the team in attack percentage (.267).
The Coaches Award, presented to sophomore Lizzy Silverstein, was awarded to the team member who made noteworthy contributions in areas of attitude, improvement and leadership. Playing in 19 games, Silverstein made contributions in every major category. She posted career-highs in kills (63), attack percentage (.172) and blocks (6).
Lehigh finished the season 19-10 and 10-5 in league play while qualifying for the Patriot League tournament for the second time in three years and first under first-year head coach Bob Bertucci. The Mountain Hawks had some stand out performances during the season including handing eventual Patriot League champion American its lone league loss of the season and its first-ever three-set loss in a regular season match since the Eagles joined the Patriot League in 2001.
