Mountain Hawks drop season finale to #11 Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team battled hard, but struggled to convert in an 8-0 loss to #11 Lafayette on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks tied the Leopards in second-half shots (10-10), this against a Lafayette squad who hadn't allowed a shot in over a game. It was also Senior Day as Lehigh's six seniors were recognized prior to the contest.
Lehigh's seniors of Kim Eng, Brittany Johnson, Mercedes Grubb, Kelsey Zeswitz, Melissa Kuhns and Carly Smith were all recognized prior to their final games in the Brown and White. All six earned the starts as well.
“The senior class as a whole played great today,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “It wasn't the outcome that we wanted, but I think they were really trying hard to improve things. We have to capitalize on certain opportunities, but the effort was definitely there.”
Lafayette took a 1-0 lead less than a minute in behind Deanna DiCroce's first of three goals on the afternoon. The Leopards added goals at 10:21 and 15:23, but the Mountain Hawks hung tough in holding a potent Lafayette offense scoreless for the next 16:09.
The Leopards eventually opened a 6-0 lead just over a minute into the second half, but again Lehigh held strong. The Mountain Hawks didn't allow a goal for the next 18:59, while earning numerous scoring chances themselves.
Lafayette added two more in a 1:36 span to give it an 8-0 lead at 56:46. However, Lehigh continued to battle, firing five shots over the game's final 13:14. Senior Kelsey Zeswitz had a dazzling chance at 59:41 which was stopped by Leopards' goalie Mara Kish. Lehigh also had a succession of three straight shots off a penalty corner, but the Mountain Hawks were unable to convert.
Final shots were 23-12 in favor of Lafayette while penalty corners were 14-5 Leopards. The Mountain Hawks bounced back to tie 10-10 in second-half shots and only trailed 6-5 in second-half penalty corners. Lehigh sophomore Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson finished with six saves in the first half while freshman Sophie Fitzpatrick posted four in the second. Smith also made a huge first-half defensive save. Jessica Deutsch had two saves in the first half for Lafayette while Kish made three in the second.
