Lehigh drops hard-fought 6-2 final at Bucknell

10/20/2012 10:42:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung tough at Bucknell, staying within 1-0 for much of the game before the Bison scored four goals in a 10:01 span to down the Mountain Hawks on Saturday, 6-2. Lehigh wouldn't quit, getting second-half goals from junior Marie Mignogna and sophomore Lindsay Metzger. The Mountain Hawks will wrap up their season when they host archrival Lafayette next Saturday for Senior Day.

“We played relentlessly in the first half,” said Lehigh assistant coach Susan Ciufo. “Bucknell had quite a few opportunities, but our defense was able to shut them down to stay within one at the half. There was a 10-minute span in the second when we got disorganized. Bucknell was able to capitalize and connect in the circle.”

Bucknell took a 1-0 lead at the 7:15 mark off the game's first penalty corner, but the Lehigh defense bounced back to contain the Bison the rest of the half. Bucknell held a 10-0 edge in first-half shots, but sophomore goalie Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson made seven saves and a strong defense led by senior Carly Smith held a strong Bison offense at bay.

Early in the second, Bucknell scored four goals in just over 10 minutes to create some distance, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't give up. Mignogna scored her first-career goal off a penalty corner, taking a feed from freshman Erin Ricker and making it 5-1 at the 51:09 mark. The Bison answered at 62:59, but Metzger responded just over a minute later off a rebound for her eighth goal of the season to round out the scoring.
“The overall effort was consistent today,” said Ciufo. “We got some nice goals from Marie and Lindsay to get us on the board.”

Bucknell held the final edge in shots (28-6) and penalty corners (12-4). Maltinsky-Wilson finished with 10 saves while freshman Sophie Fitzpatrick came in to make two over the final 21:10. A pair of Bucknell goalies combined for two saves.

The Mountain Hawks will return home next Saturday (Oct. 27) to host archrival Lafayette at 11 a.m. It will mark Senior Day as six Lehigh seniors will be recognized prior to the final home game of their careers.
