Mountain Hawks open fall schedule at Georgetown Classic

9/26/2011 4:26:00 PM | Men's Tennis

WASHINGTON – The Lehigh men's tennis team opened its fall schedule at the rain shortened Georgetown Classic Saturday at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. Friday's opening day of play was rained out forcing teams to participate in a modified format for the remainder of the tournament.

Seven Mountain Hawks participated on the weekend in singles and doubles action. The most impressive performances of the weekend were turned in by junior captain Andrew Krentz, sophomore Timur Chernykh and freshman Mitchell Petersen, who all won first round matches in the singles draw. Singles matches were played in a ten game pro set format, with Krentz downing Georgetown's Casey Distaso 10-8, Chernykh winning 10-8 over Georgetown's Charlie Caris, and Petersen downing Andrew Dottino of Georgetown 10-8. All three Mountain Hawks lost in the second round, but the Lehigh coaching staff was especially impressed with the efforts of Petersen and Krentz in second round matches against opponents from fully-funded Maryland.

Freshman Ben Gilman rebounded from a first round loss to win his first consolation match before being eliminated in the consolations by Caris.

Doubles play was noted as an area the coaches would like to see the Mountain Hawks improve. Lehigh went 0-3 in doubles, while Chernykh lost his match teaming with an opponent from UMBC.

Complete results will be posted when they become available.

The Mountain Hawks will continue their fall slate when they host the Lehigh Invitational October 14-16 on the Goodman Campus.
