Lehigh drops hard-fought 1-0 final at Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks played Saint Joseph's neck-and-neck for the majority of regulation, but a late Hawks' goal proved to be the difference as the Lehigh field hockey (1-6) team dropped a 1-0 final on Sunday. Sophomore Sierra Segear was once again stellar in goal, making 14 saves for her fourth double-digit save effort in five games. Lehigh will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to Sacred Heart to play the Pioneers and the Maine Black Bears.
“It was a great game overall,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “Both Sierra and our defense were very strong. I think we could possess the ball a little better and capitalize on our opportunities, but we played as a team today.”
Saint Joseph's fired 13 shots in the first half, seven on cage, but Segear was on target from the get-go. She made saves at 1:53, 6:25 and 7:57 to keep the game scoreless in the early going.
Later in the half, the Mountain Hawks earned their first penalty corner and got a quality chance from junior Kim Eng, but Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Liz Messaros came up with one of her two saves on the afternoon.
Segear and the Lehigh defense continued to impress, keeping the Hawks off the scoreboard until the 59:09 mark, when Meghan Githens beat Segear following a scrum in front of the cage. The goal followed a pair of Saint Joseph's penalty corners.
Lehigh tried to stage a comeback, as Tilton got off a shot with less than two minutes remaining, which was denied by Messaros to end any hopes of a comeback.
Saint Joseph's held a 25-5 edge in shots and 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Segear finished with 14 saves, two off her career high, while Messaros posted two for Saint Joe's.
The Mountain Hawks head to Sacred Heart next weekend to face the Pioneers (Friday), then Maine (Saturday), in a neutral site clash.
