Lehigh track and field teams bury Lafayette in historical wins

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams turned in dominant performances to earn victories over the Lafayette Leopards on Sunday at the Lehigh-Lafayette Dual. Despite winning just eight of 19 events, the men's squad sneaked by the Leopards, 104-98. On the women's side, Lehigh took first in 13 of 19 events to cruise to a 118-82 victory.
For just the second time in the Matt and Debbie Utesch era at Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks cross country, indoor track and field as well as outdoor track and field teams have earned a season-sweep of 6-0 in dual meets between the two rival schools.
"It's outstanding to beat a rival in Lafayette six times in the season," said Lehigh track coach Matt Utesch. "This is an excellent way to send off our seniors who have worked their tails off during the last four years. I am really proud of our teams today."
On the women's side, Kristin Slotnick was name the female track athlete of the meet for her winning efforts in the 200 meter dash, where she defeated Kelly Clyde, who was the year-long favorite going into the event. Slotnick posted a time of 25.68 seconds to earn five points for Lehigh.
In other track events, Lehigh's 4x100 relay team of Slotnick, Khaaleedah Smith, Alex Doersam and Melissa Knapp took first place with a time of 47.64 seconds, which was also an ECAC qualifying time. Over in the 3000 steeplechase, Megan Hetzel took first place with a time of 11:23.35 and Hannah Pierce finished two spots behind her in third. Also in the 1500 meter run, Lehigh had a 1, 2, 3 finish as Lauren Pietrosh took first place, clocking in at 4:42.66. Personal records were set by Brooke Astor in the 100 meter hurdles (14.87) and Elizabeth McManus in the 400 meter dash (58.57).
In the field events, Astor earned field athlete of the meet after she won the high jump (1.55 meters). In the hammer throw event, Lehigh had a 1-2 finish as Emily Settle took first with a personal record and an ECAC qualifying throw of 53.12 meters. Rebecca Duhamel placed first in the shot put (12.90 meters) and Doersam finished first in the long jump (5.42 meters).
On the men's side, Alex Maurer earned male track athlete of the meet for his personal record of 15.79 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles. The Mountain Hawks' 4x100 relay team of Devin Monroe, Ryan Paquin, Martin OTieno and Makura Compton finished in second, but still had an IC4A qualifying time of 42.47 seconds (the time to qualify is 42.50). Lehigh also had winners in the 800 meter run as Kyle O'Connor (1:53.89) took first place and a winner in the 1,500 meter run as Steve Abate (3:55.49)finished in first.
In the field events, the Mountain Hawks had a strong day as Stephen Tutunjian won male field athlete of the meet after taking first place in the long jump with a score of 6.79 meters. Tutunjian also took home the victory in the triple jump, with a final of 14.49 meters, .01 shy of the IC4A qualifying distance. Kevin Steimle beat the field by nearly 20 feet in the javelin throw, as he posted an IC4A qualifying distance of 60.79 meters. Additionally, Patrick Ciez continued his strong spring with a first place finish in the high jump (1.99 meters).
