Two school records fall on second day of PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh swimmers broke a pair of school records on day two of the Patriot League Championships Friday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Both records were set in Friday morning's preliminaries with sophomore Alex Aboud breaking his own record in the 400 yard individual medley and classmate Brooke Smalley establishing a new mark in the 100 yard butterfly.
 
The Mountain Hawks placed three swimmers in top flight championship finals on Friday. Lehigh's men sit in fifth place overall while the women are in seventh with one day remaining in the championship meet.
 
Aboud led the way for three Mountain Hawks who made the B final in the 400 IM. He followed up his record-setting 4:00.33 effort in the preliminaries with a 4:02.06 in the finals to finish 12th overall. Juniors Chris Toth and Kevin Shoemaker finished 13th and 14th.
 
Sophomore Tyler Lareau posted the top Lehigh finish to date by placing third in the 100 back with a time of 50.62. Lehigh placed three others in the B final, led by senior Andrew DiPietro who won the B race with a time of 51.53. Senior Billy Dunne and freshman Matt Chrzanowski added 12th and 14th place finishes respectively.
 
Junior Angelo DiGiacinto also reached a championship final, taking sixth in the 100 fly with a time of 50.01 seconds. Sophomore Kyle Jennings finished 11th in the same event.
 
Lehigh placed three student-athletes in the consolation finals of the 200 free and 100 breast. DiPietro led the Mountain Hawks with a tenth place finish in the 200 free. Sophomore Frank Cuzzola finished 11th and classmate David Pennenga took 16th. Freshman Connor Cackovic led Lehigh in the 100 breast with a 12th place finish (59.09) with freshman Chris Hoke finishing 14th and junior Jared Blacker finishing 16th.
 
Both men's relay teams finished fourth. Lareau, Aboud, DiGiacinto and Hoke teamed up to post a time of 1:33.33 in the 200 free relay, while Cuzzola, DiPietro, Pennenga and Toth posted a 6:45.77 in the 800 free relay.
 
Smalley's posted a time of 56.85 in the 100 fly preliminaries to break a record set by Jamie Grivalsky in 2000. In the B final Smalley finished seventh, and 15th overall with a time of 57.64, while junior Alena Pollitt placed 16th in the same event. Smalley and Pollitt also reached the B final in the 100 back with Smalley placing 12th with a time of 58.80 seconds while Pollitt finished 16th.
 
Freshman Meredith Bayer became the first Lehigh woman to reach an A final at this year's championships but had to settle for eighth place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.37. Sophomore Danielle Caruso finshed 13th overall with her fifth place finish in the B final.
 
In other women's action junior Paola Simon finished 14th overall in the 200 free with a final time of 1:55.17. Lehigh had three representatives in the B final in the 100 breast. Freshman Stephanie Yaszemski led the way placing 11th with a time of 1:07.45. Sophomore Emily DiDonato took 12th in the event while senior Allison Montanye finished in 16th place.
 
Lehigh's women had a strong showing in the 800 free relay, finishing third overall with a time of 7:41.50. The relay team was comprised of juniors Priscilla Barletta and Paola Simon, senior Kristen Keenan and sophomore Katie Haycraft.
 
Smalley, DiDonato, Pollitt and Montanye took sixth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.49.
 
In the team races, Navy's men are out to another commanding lead over second place Army, while the Colgate women remain in first place, 80 points ahead of Navy.
 
The Patriot League Championships will conclude Saturday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Preliminaries are once again set for 10:30 a.m. with finals slated for a 6 p.m. start.
