Mountain Hawks have successful Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track teams wrapped up a strong first meet of the season Friday at the Season Opener. The Mountain Hawks had a number of stellar performances including 14-first place finishes, including ten on the women's side highlighed by junior E'Lana Lemon who won the weight throw with an IC4A/ECAC qualifying distance of 17.57m. And on the men's side, senior Stephen Tutunjian won the triple jump with an IC4A/ECAC qualifying distance of 14.56m while sophomore Patrick Ciez also qualified in the high jump (2.04m).
{LINKS}The meet included Moravian, Millersville, Alvernia, Penn, Loyola (Md.), Johns Hopkins and Shippensburg.
On the men's side, Tutunjian won the triple jump with an IC4A/ECAC qualifying distance of 14.56m, surpassing the distance of 14.30m that was needed to qualify. Tutunjian qualified in last year's Season Opener as well.
Tutunjian also placed first in the long jump with a distance of 6.88m. Sophomore Ryan Pacquin took third (6.66m), Alexander Maurer was fourth (6.64m) and senior Kyle Forrest was ninth (6.33m)
Sophomore Seth Robinson won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49, missing the IC4A/ECAC qualifying time by less than half of a second. Paquin took second in the race with a time of 8.55 while freshman Robert Hugin was sixth (8.93) and Forrest was eighth (9.16).
In the weight throw, Lehigh placed five in the top six including the top four spots. Christopher Buck took first (15.80m) while Joseph Gianndrea was second (13.50), Benjamin Sourbeer was third (13.41) and Benjamin Beauchamp was fourth. Zachary Nardone rounded out the group in sixth (12.47).
On the women's side, sophomore Brooke Astor won the Women's Indoor Pentathlon with 3,211 points as she finished first in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and was second in the shot put and third in the 800-meter run.
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Natalie Bates finished second behind Astor with 2,937 points in the Pentathlon as Astor won the 800-meter run as she didn't finish lower than fifth in any event.
Sophomore Jessica Ernst placed fifth and freshman Babette Hohrath was seventh in the event.
In the 1,000-meter run, Lehigh took the top three spots as juniors Julia Perry, Lauren Pietrosh and Catherine Withers took first, second and third, respectively. Perry finished with a time of 2:59.32 while Pietrosh was close behind with a time of 3:01.61 and Withers crossed the finish line at 3:12.88. Also, sophomore Bridget Joyce was eighth in the event with a time of 3:25.08.
Another first place finish came in the 60-meter dash as junior Khaaleedah Smith took the top spot with a time of 8:07. And freshman Madeline Eustache took seventh in the event with a time of 8:40.
In the 400-meter dash, Lehigh took the top three spots as freshman Halie Carter, junior Kristin Slotnick and junior Melissa Knapp finished within two seconds of each other. Carter took first in her first collegiate meet with a time of 1:00.86 while Slotnick took second with a time of 1:01.52 and Napp third with a time of 1:02.81. Also in the race, freshman Tarny Schmelzinger finished tenth with a time of 1:03.80 and was less than a second away from fourth place.
In the 800-meter run, Lehigh took four of the top five spots as junior Brittany Pietrosh finished first with a time of 2:25.30 and junior Alyssa Donahue was second with a time of 2:26.56. Then junior Elizabeth McManus was fourth with a time of 2:28.65 and freshman Victoria Mullane took fifth with a time of 2:32.49.
Lehigh took the top two spots in the 200-meter dash as Smith placed first – her second of the meet - with a time of 26.66 and was just 1.21 seconds away from the IC4A/ECAC qualifying time of 25.04. Senior Alexandra Doersam was second with a time of 27.19. Also in the race, sophomore Victoria Oliver was eighth with a time of 27.97 and freshman Jonelle Jerwick was 20th with a time of 30.10.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Lehigh entered three squads and each finished in the top four including Smith, Donahue, McManus and Schmelzinger who took first with a time of 4:08.72. Lauren Pietrosh, Brittany Pietrosh, Alexandra Neville and Kethleen Ryan took third with a time of 4:16.04, finishing less than second back from the second place. And Slotnick, Carter, Knapp and freshman Eleanor Meyers were fourth with a time of 4:20.86.
Lehigh took the top two sports in the high jump as sophomores Alexis Wachter took top honors with 1.50m while Tiffany Penge took second.
In the weight throw, Lehigh took the top three sports and four of the first five. Junior E'Lana Lemon won the event with 17.57m while sophomore Rebecca Duhamel was second (14.65m) and sophomore Jimil Ataman was third (13.86m). Sophomore Katie Baglio was fifth with 12.10m and freshman Allison Howard was ninth (10.20m)
Lehigh also took the top two sports in the javelin throw as junior Melissa Romero took first with 38.15m and freshman Carly Deskins was second with 33.68m.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Friday, December 9th for the Fast Times Before Finals at the Rauch Field House on Goodman Campus.
