Mountain Hawks post 3-1 win at Holy Cross in regular season finale

WORCESTER, Mass. - Three different Mountain Hawks scored goals while sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Segear made five saves to lead the Lehigh field hockey team to a 3-1 win at Holy Cross Saturday. With the victory, the Mountain Hawks finish 3-2 in Patriot League play for the first time since 2007 and will enter next weekend's league semifinals as either the No. 3 or 4 seed and face Lafayette on Friday.
“Sierra played great,” said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. “We are very excited to accomplish our goal of being over .500 in the Patriot League and making it into the tournament. Now, we're preparing and looking ahead to tournament play.”
The American at Lafayette game scheduled for this afternoon was postponed to Sunday due to wintry weather. The winner of that game will be the Patriot League Regular Season Champion and host next weekend's tournament. Lehigh will face the Leopards regardless of Sunday's outcome, either in the 3-versus-2 game or 4-versus-1 game. Senior Abby Tilton gave Lehigh a quick lead at the 14:04 mark, taking a feed from fellow senior Caitlin Donnelly and finishing her seventh goal of the season, and third in the last four Patriot League contests
Junior Kim Eng made it 2-0 just before halftime on a breakaway, carrying it down the left side before beating Holy Cross goalkeeper Kat Matchett at the 33:47 mark. Segear was strong in the first half, making three saves to withstand 11 total Crusaders' shot to keep Holy Cross scoreless after 35 minutes.
Donnelly made it 3-0 at 49:58, beating Matchett off a rebound, while the Crusaders added a late tally at 65:10, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Holy Cross led the final shot count, 16-12 while the Crusaders earned 13 penalty corners to the Mountain Hawks' five. Segear finished with four saves while Matchett posted four.
Lehigh now looks ahead to its second Patriot League Tournament appearance in the last three years. The Mountain Hawks will face Lafayette, either in Easton or at American - depending on Sunday's result.
