Mountain Hawks fall 6-1 in season-opener at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Lehigh opened its spring season on Sunday but No. 69 Penn State proved to be too strong as the Nittany Lions downed the Mountain Hawks 6-1 at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. Sophomore Andrew Krentz earned a win at No. 6 singles for the Mountain Hawks but the Nittany Lions swept the doubles matches and won the first five singles flights.

Chris Hasyn and Russell Bader started things off for the Nittany Lions with an 8-2 win over freshman Mark Goldberg and senior Arnaldo Pacheco at No. 3 doubles. Taylor Cohen and Bryan Welnetz clinched the first point with an 8-4 win over sophomore Matt Savran and senior Cameron Silbert at No. 2 doubles. Eddie Bourchier and Jason Lee topped Lehigh's top doubles team of seniors Troy List and Collin Laffey also by an 8-4 score.
The Mountain Hawks battled through singles play, forcing a third set in three of the six matches. Lee downed Savran at No. 3 singles and Welnetz followed with a win over Laffey at No. 2 singles to extend Penn State's lead at to 3-0.
At No. 4 singles Goldberg won the first set from Cohen 6-4, but the Lion roared back to take the next two 6-1 and 6-2 to clinch the match for Penn State.List won the second set against Bourchier at No. 1 singles 6-3 to force a deciding third set, but the reigning Patriot League player of the year fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Krentz accounted for Lehigh's only point, with his win over Guanhua Chen at No. 6 singles. Krentz dropped the first set 6-0, but won the second 6-4 and was dominant in a 10-1 win in the third set tiebreaker.
The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule next week when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Lewis Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
