BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men’s cross country student-athlete Evans Kosgei garnered more academic accolades as he was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic team, which was announced on Monday. Kosgei is the first Lehigh male runner to receive the award and is the only member of the Patriot League that was honored this year.
The award is given out to athletes who have succeeded not only in athletics, but also in the classroom. To be eligible for recognition the student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and finish in the top-15 (or top 10 percent) at their respective NCAA regional meet.
Kosgei exceeded those standards as he carries a 3.96 GPA and he finished in the top 10 percent (17th) at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. His 17th place finish was the highest ever by a member of the Lehigh men’s cross country team.
Earlier this athletic year, Kosgei became the first Lehigh runner to be named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year. An Integrated Business and Engineering major with a focus in computer science, Kosgei is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has twice had a perfect 4.0 semester. A native of Kitale, Kenya, Kosgei is one of three student-athletes at Lehigh to be honored as a PC Rossin Fellow for outstanding academic success.
Besides his great finish at regionals, Kosgei was named to the All-League team after he came in second at the 2009 Patriot League Cross Country Championship.
Kosgei is currently competing with the Lehigh men's track and field team.
