Mountain Hawks edged by Bucknell 4-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight match, Lehigh suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss to a league foe as the Mountain Hawks were edged by Bucknell 4-3 Wednesday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. Juniors Troy List and Collin Laffey won at doubles and singles and freshman Andrew Krentz picked up another win at No. 6 singles, but the Bison won the doubles point and clinched the match with Josh Katten’s three-set win over sophomore Leland Richardson at No. 3 singles.
Both teams are now 8-11 overall. Lehigh falls to 1-4 against league opponents while Bucknell improves to 3-2.
In doubles play, List and Laffey got Lehigh off to a good start with an 8-4 win over Anton Kovic and Kelly Morque, but the visiting Bison came back to claim the opening point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
List pulled Lehigh even with a straight-set win over Kovic at No. 1 singles. Bucknell picked up straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, while Krentz downed Gregory Maxson 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The match came down to a pair of three set matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Bucknell picked up the clinching point at No. 3 where Katten dropped the opening set to Richardson 6-7 but rallied to take the next two sets by 6-4 scores. Laffey brought Lehigh within a point at the end, rallying from a set down to defeat Gregg Cohenca 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks is a trip to rival Lafayette in the final regular season match before next weekend’s Patriot League tournament in Lewisburg, Pa. The Lehigh-Lafayette tilt is set for a 3 p.m. start Monday from Lafayette’s Sullivan Courts.
