BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh placed a pair of student-athletes on the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League football team, announced by the league on Tuesday. Senior kicker Tom Randazza and junior linebacker Tanner Rivas represent the Mountain Hawks on the squad of 14 student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Football Academic All-Patriot League Team has 14 student-athletes to equal one-half the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team.
Randazza owns a 3.80 grade point average as an information and systems engineering major. He is a member of both the Dean's list and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. On the field, Randazza began the season as Lehigh's kickoff specialist and midway through the season added the placekicking duties. Randazza is a perfect 8-for-8 on field goal attempts this season and was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week on November 15.
Rivas adds Academic All-League honors to the second team All-Patriot League honor he received earlier Tuesday. A finance major, Rivas owns a 3.53 GPA and has appeared on both the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Rivas ranks fourth on the Mountain Hawks in tackles and second in both tackles for loss and sacks. He was also honored once by the league this season, earning Defensive Player of the Week honors on November 1 after making ten tackles and blocking a field goal in a win over Colgate.
Also on Tuesday, Bucknell senior linebacker Travis Nissley was voted Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for football by the league's sports information directors.
Randazza and Rivas are preparing for Lehigh's NCAA FCS first round playoff game on Saturday when the 18th-ranked Mountain Hawks travel to No. 16 Northern Iowa. Kickoff is set for noon CST from UNI-Dome with audio coverage on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as online at Lehighsports.com.
