BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh begins its three-game regular season-ending road trip Saturday afternoon against the Holy Cross Crusaders at Fitton Field. The Mountain Hawks won their fourth straight game last weekend in dominant fashion, downing Patriot League preseason favorite Colgate 44-14. At 2-0 Lehigh is the only undefeated team in the Patriot League and can inch closer to its first Patriot League title since 2006 with a win. Junior quarterback Chris Lum is coming off a career day, after throwing for 310 yards and accounting for three touchdowns against the Raiders. Holy Cross, the defending Patriot League champion, comes in at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Crusaders were idle last week, but prior to the bye enjoyed a thrilling last-second 31-24 win at Colgate as Ryan Taggart threw a 14-yard touchdown to Bill Edger with five seconds remaining.
Lum has now put together four straight solid performances since returning to the starting lineup against Fordham. In his last four games, all Lehigh wins, Lum is averaging 256 yards through the air and has thrown nine touchdown passes with just one interception. Lum completed 77 percent of his passes against Colgate while tossing two touchdowns and rushing for a third. He was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Michigan native owns a 7-3 record in ten career starts.
Lehigh's linebacking corps has been an area of strength for the Mountain Hawks all season long. Lehigh's four starting linebackers senior captain Al Pierce and juniors Mike Groome, Colin Newton and Tanner Rivas are the team's top four tacklers. Groome has stepped in for injured fifth-year senior Troy Taylor and leads the team with 76 total tackles, including a team-best 12 against Colgate. Pierce is next with 58 followed by Newton with 50 and Rivas with 47. The quartet also has 21 tackles-for-loss, 13.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles this year. Rivas was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after making ten tackles, including a key tackle-for-loss and blocking a kick against Colgate. Groome (October 11) and Pierce (September 6) have also been honored with the award this season.
