Rey last Mountain Hawk standing after session III

ST. LOUIS – Session three of the 2009 NCAA Championships is now complete with freshman Zach Rey the last Lehigh wrestler standing after Friday’s afternoon session. Rey dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Jermail Porter of Kent State in the quarterfinals and will wrestle for All-America honors on Friday night. The five Mountain Hawks who were alive in the consolation brackets after day one of the tournament were eliminated in Friday’s afternoon session.

Rey scored the opening takedown of the bout in the second period on a single leg shot to take a 2-1 lead. The much larger Porter escaped to tie the match at two and then cut Rey loose in the third to give the 11th seeded freshman a 3-2 lead. Rey clung to his lead throughout the third period, despite a warning for stalling, before Porter; the No. 3 seed scored a takedown off a body lock with six seconds remaining for the come-from-behind victory.

Next up for Rey is a round of 12 matchup with Pittsburgh’s Zach Sheaffer. Rey will be looking to avenge a 2-1 loss to Sheaffer in November and with a victory, Rey would become Lehigh’s first All-America since 2006.

Of the five Lehigh wrestlers alive in the consolations, senior Trevor Chinn and juniors Seth Ciasulli and David Craig each won their second round consolations to move into the third round. Ciasulli picked up his second pin of the tournament as he stuck Chris Bencivenga of UNC Greensboro in 1:37. In his third round consolation, Ciasulli was eliminated by Penn State’s Frank Molinaro, who won a 4-0 decision.

Chinn, like Ciasulli, avenged an earlier loss to his second round consolation opponent with a 6-4 victory over David Jauregui of West Virginia. Chinn secured the winning takedown at the edge of the mat with just two seconds remaining in the third period. In the next round however, Chinn lost by defensive fall to Iowa State’s Mitch Mueller in just 0:44.

At 184 Craig remained alive in his first match as a third period escape was all that was necessary to beat Chris McNeil of Oklahoma State 1-0. In his next match against Alex Dolly of Northern Iowa, Craig fell behind 5-0 in the first period on a takedown and three-point near fall, but answered with a takedown and two-point near fall in the second. A penalty point for stalling against Dolly tied the bout at five, but Dolly’s riding time advantage enabled him to advance with a 6-5 victory.

Junior Mike Galante and sophomore Alex Caruso were ousted in the second round of consolations. Galante dropped a 4-2 decision to Tyler Sherfey of Boise State while Caruso’s late comeback attempt was thwarted by Iowa State’s Duke Burk, who held on for a 7-6.

The team race has become very interesting with Ohio State storming ahead after session three with 61.5 points. The Buckeyes lead Iowa State who has 57.5 points, with Nebraska, Iowa and Edinboro rounding out the top five. The Mountain Hawks currently sit in a tie for 20th place with 20.5 points.

The NCAA Championships continue on Friday night with the semifinals and two rounds of consolations, including Zach Rey’s round of 12 match versus Zach Sheaffer. Action begins at 6 p.m.  CST and coverage of Rey’s bout plus select semifinal action can be heard for free on Lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports College Broadcast.
