MELBOURNE, Fla. – Lehigh opened its spring break trip to Florida with a 7-2 setback to Division II power Florida Tech Monday afternoon on the Fee Avenue Courts. The Mountain Hawks were only able to muster one doubles win and one singles win in the match, which was contested in a best-of-nine-points format. The loss is Lehigh’s second straight and drops the Mountain Hawks to 3-8 on the season.
The host Panthers picked up wins at first and third doubles for the opening two points, but Lehigh’s No. 2 doubles team of sophomores Arnaldo Pacheco and Cameron Silbert delivered an 8-6 win over James McLane and Corey Hodes to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard.
In singles play, sophomore Troy List saw his personal six match winning streak come to an end as he was upended by McLane 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Lehigh’s lone singles win came from freshman Edgars Rauza, who downed Michael Schmidt 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Florida Tech also posted straight-set wins at second, fourth and fifth doubles, while Yan Carlo Rodriguez needed a third-set ten-point tiebreak to knock off Lehigh freshman Ryan Krueger at No. 6 singles.
