BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It took seven tries, but Lehigh finally picked up its first win of the season as the Mountain Hawks blanked Mount St. Mary’s 7-0 capping off a long day of tennis action inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Earlier in the day the Mountain Hawks fell to Connecticut by a 5-2 score, so with the Sunday split, Lehigh is now 1-6 on the spring season.
“Our guys have faced a lot of tough competition,” said Lehigh head coach Dave Shook. “We’ve battled hard and competed well against scholarship programs and teams from strong conferences like the Ivy League, Big Ten and Big East. Today we finally met a team that was on our level and our guys responded with a strong performance.”
Sophomore Troy List continued his strong play for the Brown and White as he went 2-0 on the day in singles and teamed with Collin Laffey to go 2-0 in doubles action as well.
Things started well against UConn, as the Mountain Hawks earned the doubles point with wins from List and Laffey as well as freshman Leland Richardson and sophomore Chris Collins at No. 3 doubles.
Singles play was not as kind to Lehigh as the visiting Huskies won five of the six flights to rally for the win. List picked up Lehigh’s only singles point with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Joe Goldstein at No. 1 singles. The Mountain Hawks managed to make things interesting as two of UConn’s singles wins required three sets. Freshman Leland Richardson took a set from Joey Michaels in a 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 loss at No. 3 singles, while classmate Ryan Krueger fell in three sets to Tom Cook at No. 6 singles. Like Richardson, Krueger took the second set in his match.
Due to time constraints, Lehigh and Mount St. Mary’s played a modified format of three doubles matches and four singles flights, and the evening belonged to the Mountain Hawks, who swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, then won all four singles matches.
List and Laffey cruised to straight set wins at the top two singles flights, while Rauza and Collins battled to preserve the shutout with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the court on Saturday when they host another tri-match at the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh will face Monmouth at 9 a.m. and St. Francis (N.Y.) at 4 p.m.
