Schappert named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Jenni Schappert was selected as the 2006 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s cross country as it was announced by the league on Tuesday. Schappert posted three of the top six times for the Mountain Hawk women this season and was the top finisher for the women in all four races she competed in. An international relations major with a 3.87 cumulative grade point average, Schappert is the programs’s first-ever Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Following a remarkable junior season where she became the first-ever Lehigh athlete to compete at the NCAA Championship Meet, Schappert kicked off her final year in the Brown and White by finishing first at the Lehigh Valley Cross Country Championships and the Lafayette Dual—the first two meets of the Mountain Hawks’ season. She won the Lehigh Valley Cross Country Championships, completing the race in a time of 22:31. Two weeks later at the Lafayette Dual, Schappert shaved nine seconds off her time. The North East, Md. native ran Lehigh’s top 6K time of 21:27 at the elite Paul Short Invitational where she finished 24th out of 237 competitors. She capped off her career by finishing fourth overall at the Patriot League Championship Meet by completing the course in a time of 23:47.

Also announced on Tuesday were the league’s Academic Honor Roll for both men’s and women’s cross country. On the men’s side, six Mountain Hawks were recognized with seniors Kevin Brownell, Steve Rosinski, Sean Swift and Victor Vientos, junior Joe Kelly and sophomore Dan DeWitt each being named to the honor roll that consisted of 66 athletes. American’s Conor Lanz was selected as the men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

For the women, seven Mountain Hawks were selected to the honor roll that consisted of 61 athletes. In addition to Schappert, seniors Carolyn House, Sarah Seiler and Kirsten Wert, sophomores Shannon Alejandro and Katie McClernand and freshman Kaitlin Grimm were honored for their efforts in the classroom.

To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete of the Year, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or above, be a starter or a key player in the sport and be at least a sophomore. To be eligible for the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must earn a 3.20 GPA in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter.
