BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three Lehigh student-athletes were honored on Tuesday afternoon at the Lehigh Valley Association for Women at Moravian College. Senior field hockey player Marissa Iannarone, senior softball standout Mary Wieder and junior cross country/track and field runner Jen Schappert were all honored by the association, with Iannarone and Schappert earning Outstanding Athlete by Sport awards, and Wieder being honored with the Outstanding Athlete Award for Colleges-Universities.
Iannarone was a First-Team All-League selection this past season after leading the Mountain Hawks in assists and points, and tying for the team lead in goals. Her three game-winning goals also led the Brown and White, with two of those scores coming versus Patriot League opponents. Iannarone ranked among the Patriot League leaders in several categories as well, including ninth in points and goals, seventh in assists and fourth in game-winning goals. For her career, Iannarone appeared in 73 games, starting 60, and she totaled 15 goals, 17 assists and 47 points. In addition, she scored five game-winning goals and is a multi-year member of the both the Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Lehigh’s first-ever Academic All-American in the sport of cross country, Schappert has had a remarkable two-year run for the Mountain Hawks on the trail and the track. Schappert was an All Patriot League selection in each of the past two seasons, finishing as the runner-up at the league championships both times. Schappert also qualified for the NCAA Regionals each of those seasons, and became the first NCAA National Championship qualifier in 2005. On the track, the international relations major is a multi-year All-League selection and holds the school record in a number of events, including the one-mile run, 10K and 5K. Schappert has also qualified for the East Regionals in both the indoor and outdoor season. In the classroom, Schappert is a multi-year member of the both the Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Through her first three seasons, Mary Wieder has earned All-League honors three times, and was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP in 2004. Behind the plate, she has successfully handled some of the best pitchers in Patriot League history, but Wieder has made her mark in the batters box as well. A career .321 hitter, Wieder was batting .362 as of May 3, with a career-high and school record tying seven home runs. With the season still in progress, Wieder leads the Patriot League in RBI and total bases, and is now second on Lehigh’s career home run list with 14.
