Schappert named Patriot League Runner of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time this season, junior Jen Schappert has been named the Patriot League Runner of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. The Maryland native helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a 17th place finish at last weekend’s 32nd Paul Short Run on the Goodman Course. It was Lehigh’s highest finish on the women’s side since ending in 15th place in 2002. Schappert crossed the finish line in a time of 21:18.1, posting the first top-25 finish on the women’s side, since Lucinda Hull crossed in 16th place in 2001. This marked the second straight week a Lehigh female was honored by the Patriot League, as senior Andrea Luebbe won the award last week.

Schappert teamed with Lehigh’s top male finisher Rob Hampson to give the Mountain Hawks their first-ever male and female top-25 individual finishers since 2001. This was Schappert’s first race since the season opening Lehigh Valley Championships, as she sat out Lehigh’s last two. In that season opening race, Schappert finished second, behind teammate Sarah Seiler. Schappert and the Brown and White easily won that race.

The junior captain is a member of both the Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, and last season, became the first ever Academic All-American for Lehigh in cross country.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, October 15, when the Mountain Hawks travel to University Park, to compete in the Penn State Invitational. The first race is scheduled for 11:00 AM that day.
