Cross country honors six at Fall Sports Banquet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The men’s and women’s cross country teams celebrated a stellar fall season where both teams finished third at the Patriot League Championships at the Eugene M. '35 and Harriet Henry Fall Sports Banquet. Coaches Debbie Utesch and Todd Etters looked back on 2008 and honored six athletes for their performances on and off the course in an event sponsored by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership. 

 

Seniors Shannon Alejandro and Jon Wetzel each won the Athlete of the Year Award for the second-consecutive year. The Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. Alejandro earned a fifth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships at 21:38.8, good enough to earn a spot as First Team All-Patriot League. Wetzel finished third at the Patriot League Championships, also earning First Team All-Patriot League honors with a time of 24:52.1.

 

Senior Ben Lampi earned his second-consecutive Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and Elizabeth Robinson took home the hardware for the first time on the women’s side. The Scholar-Athlete Award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. Lampi earned a 3.67 GPA as a mechanical engineering major, and also finished eighth in the Patriot League Championships to earn First Team All-Patriot League recognition. Robinson put up a 3.41 GPA as a sociology major and was Lehigh’s No. 6 finisher at the Patriot League Championships.

 

Leo Smith and Kim Scotto earned this year’s Coaches Awards, given to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. The senior Smith finished out a stellar career with a 48th place finish at the Patriot League Championships and was one of a group of five strong seniors to contribute consistently this season. Scotto emerged as a standout in her senior season after running shorter distances in track and field for the first three years of her career. Scotto finished 46th at the Patriot League Championships, making her the No. 7 finisher for Lehigh in the race.
