Pierce named Patriot League Rookie of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League named Katherine Pierce its Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after Pierce helped lead the women’s cross country team to a rout over its archrival Lafayette on Saturday.

Pierce gave the Mountain Hawks essential points in a 40-21 dominating win over the Leopards on Goodman Campus. She finished second in the race, only trailing teammate Shannon Alejandro. Pierce finished more than 15 seconds ahead of the top Lafayette runner, and she fell just eight seconds off her career-best time on an extremely humid day in Bethlehem.

The Lehigh women took seven of the top nine spots to run away with the race victory.

Pierce made an immediate impact for the Mountain Hawks in her first race on August 29, finishing in fifth place at the Lehigh Valley Championships. She has been the top freshman finisher in each of her two collegiate races.

Lehigh has earned victories on both the men’s and women’s side in its first two meets of the 2008 season.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on September 20, when they travel to Van Cortland Park, N.Y. for the Iona Meet of Champions.
