9/12/2003 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball
Bethlehem, PA-Lehigh enters tonight’s match with Long Island having lost three consecutive matches. The Mountain Hawks fell to Army in five games on November 2nd, Navy in four games on November 9th, and American in three games on November 10th. The American match, although a loss, was one of the most competitive matches for Lehigh this season. American, who has only dropped four games during league play, committed several errors and at one point relinquished the lead late in game three.
During the losing streak Jeannette Singleton paced the team with 42 kills. Setter Lisa Furusawa tallied 103 assists, while teammate Jill Kober led in digs with 43. Three-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week Morgan Volkart has struggled. In the three game span prior to the streak she tallied 11 total blocks, however, since the streak began she has managed only six total blocks.
Overall for Lehigh, Singleton continues to lead the team in kills with 409. With a strong performance this evening and or Friday’s match with Lafayette, setter Lisa Furusawa should surpass the 1,000 assists plateau. She has achieved a season total of 967 assists and averages 9.87 assists per game. Other statistical leaders for Lehigh include Rochelle Healea (40 service aces), Jill Kober (430 digs), and Morgan Volkart (113 blocks).
Long Island should serve as a formidable foe for the Mountain Hawks. The Blackbirds enter the match with an 18-14 record and are 6-1 in the NEC. Leading the way for LIU is Cristina Pintilie. The junior from Cluj Napoca, Romania has tallied 663 kills along with 62 service aces. Other statistical leaders for the Blackbirds include Ivana Vasiljevic (1,3,15 assists and 384 digs) and April Danzy (73 total blocks).
Lehigh returns to action Friday at Grace Hall vs. Lafayette. It will be the final volleyball match at Grace Hall prior to renovations. Match time is 7:00 p.m. and along with tonight’s match can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
