BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer announced the Mountain Hawks volleyball class of 2013 on Thursday, which includes two incoming student-athletes. The list includes Margy Acton, a defensive specialist from Elmhurst, Illinois, and Taylor Poole, a middle hitter from Keller, Texas.
Margy Acton is a 5’6” defensive specialist from Fenwick Catholic High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. Acton was a two year starter at Libero for Fenwick High School, and was selected as Team MVP as a senior. She was voted a unanimous All-Conference selection in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, and also received All-Area Player of the Year honors. Acton plays club volleyball for first Alliance Volleyball Club. The team finished seventh at the 2008 JVDA National championships and Acton was selected as a member of the Great Lakes Regional Team. This past season, First Alliance Volleyball Club finished fifth at the National Junior Classic, third in the Great Lakes Power League, and third at the AAU National championships in Orlando. Along the way Acton earned All-America laurels. Off the court, Acton is a member of the National Honor Society and is an Illinois State Scholar.
Maurer offered her thoughts on Acton. “It is not often that you see a defensive player receive the All-Area Player of the Year award, but that is a tribute to how much of an impact Margy has on a game and how frustrating she makes it for opposing hitters. Margy’s strengths are her quickness, her relentless pursuit of the ball, her competitiveness, her ability to read, and her excellent ball control skills. Margy has played on a highly successful club team that produces and competes against some of the best players in the nation. This experience will help accelerate her transition to the college game and we could see Margy competing for playing time very early in her career.”
Coming from Keller High school in Kellar, Texas is Taylor Poole, a 6’0” middle hitter. In high school, Poole was selected to Lone Star Volleyball All-Texas Team Special Recognition and was nominated as a second team All District 5-5A selection. Poole plays club volleyball for TAV. This year, TAV placed first at the Lone Star and NEQ Qualifiers, and qualified for the National championship, which was held in Miami, where TAV placed third over the Fourth of July weekend. In 2008 her club team, North Dallas Juniors placed 21st at the National Tournament and finished first at the North Texas Regional championships. Poole is a member of the National Honor Society, MU Alpha Theta Society, Business Professionals of America, Circle of Friends, and Health Occupational Students of America. She has been on the All-Area Academic team the last two years, is a 2009 Honor Graduate, has been selected to the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Program, and has been selected as a 2009 Texas Scholar with two Advanced Measures.
Maurer says, “We have always been excited about Taylor’s skill level and athleticism, but the thing that impresses me the most about Taylor is that every time I see her she has improved and taken her game to another level. Taylor is an extremely athletic middle who is a very good blocker and runs off of one foot very well. Some middles are either considered really good blockers or are very good offensively, but Taylor is equally adept at both. She plays for one of the top clubs in Texas, has been trained extremely well, and simply knows how to win. We also expect Taylor to compete for playing time very early in her career.”
In addition to the two newest members, Lehigh also returns a group of 12 for the upcoming season.
